Being a caregiver means being able to make a real difference in people’s lives and we at Sentinel Care Services pride ourselves on supporting existing staff and enabling new colleagues to attain the highest possible care for the comfort of our clients.
But why is being a caregiver such a great and fulfilling job? We asked one of our newest recruits, Isaac, to explain. Isaac is 20 years old and joined us in June.
“I had some experience volunteering as a swimming teacher and, to be honest, I wanted to do something to help people,” he said.
“The help we provide at Sentinel is essential to our clients leading as normal a life as possible in their own homes and remaining independent. As well as the personal care we provide, we also make sure clients are eating properly and getting the right nutrition from their diet.
“But it is a lot more than that. I have the same clients I see every day and you get to know them. Everyone is different and interesting to talk and listen to. Most of our clients are elderly, though there are obviously younger people who need our help.
“I just find their lives fascinating. I believe that nobody gets to 40 without having at least one interesting story to tell.”
“My day usually starts with my first call around 7.15am. I help people get up and then, if necessary, help with their personal care to varying degrees.
“Before I became a caregiver I thought I might have a problem with this aspect of the job. I was a little nervous about it but your training kicks in and it doesn’t affect me and you get used to it.
“When I started in June I was given substantial theoretical training and then spent time shadowing while I was learning the job.
“The job is usually fairly routine and it’s a question of making sure the clients have all they need – food and medication and so on – and that everything is as it should be.
“I love the job and am really glad I decided to make the move into this line of work. Every day is a joy and it is so pleasing to think at the end of the day that I have been able to do something to help keep a client happy and in their own home.
“I would say to anyone who is thinking about a career in care, give it a try. You will find it most rewarding and you really can make a difference.”
